A tuck top box separates the two jobs a carton has to do. The lid tucks, because a lid needs to open and close repeatedly without tearing. The base locks, because the base is what stops the contents falling through.
Why the base is the interesting part
On a plain reverse tuck, the bottom is a tucked flap, and a tucked flap under sustained weight eventually works loose. A locking base solves that.
- Auto-lock (crash-lock) — pre-glued panels that snap into a locked base as you square the box up. One motion, no tape. The fastest option at a packing bench and the reason it dominates in food and takeaway.
- Snap-lock (1-2-3 bottom) — folded closed by hand in sequence. No glue, so slightly cheaper, but slower per box and more dependent on being folded correctly.
If you are packing more than a few dozen units a day, auto-lock usually pays for itself in labour before it costs you anything in board.
Choosing between this and a mailer
Tuck top construction is retail-first: it looks and feels like a product box. A tuck top mailer is the same closure idea applied to a one-piece corrugated mailer, built for posting rather than shelving.
The short version: if it goes on a shelf, tuck top carton. If it goes in the post on its own, mailer.

Does an auto-lock base need glue?
It is glued in production, not by you. It arrives flat and locks itself when squared up.
How much weight can it hold?
Considerably more than a tucked base, but it depends on caliper and footprint. Tell us the weight and we will specify to it.
Can the lid have a window?
Yes — die-cut windows with or without film are straightforward on this construction.

We size the box around what goes inside and add the clearance it needs. That removes void fill you would otherwise buy and dimensional weight you would otherwise pay on every order.
