Black looks like the simplest possible packaging decision and is the hardest to execute. Every problem in printing gets worse as coverage increases, and black is total coverage by definition.
Cracking at the fold
This is the failure that catches people out. Board is a fibrous material, and creasing it stretches the surface. Under a heavy black ink layer, that stretch cracks the ink and exposes the pale fibre beneath — a thin grey-white line down every fold, visible on a box that was otherwise perfect.
Managing it is a production matter: correct crease depth for the board caliper, ink laid at the right density rather than as heavily as possible, and scoring that works with the grain instead of across it. It is controllable, but it has to be planned rather than hoped for.
Printed black or dyed board
Two routes, with a real cost difference.
Flood printing lays black ink over ordinary board. Cheaper, and it lets you print other colours on top — but the board core stays pale, so every cut edge shows as a light line and any scuff reveals the substrate.
Dyed-through board is black all the way through. Cut edges are black, scuffs barely show, and the depth of colour is noticeably richer. It costs more per sheet and limits what can be printed over it, since light inks disappear on a black ground.
Fingerprints, and the fix
Gloss black is a fingerprint magnet — boxes are marked before they leave the packing bench. Matte or soft-touch lamination almost eliminates it and gives a better hand-feel besides. This is the one product where we would treat lamination as close to necessary rather than optional, with the recyclability trade-off noted on luxury mailer boxes.
What black does well
Contrast. Foil stamping, spot UV and white ink all read more strongly against black than against any other ground, which is why premium categories return to it repeatedly.
Frequently asked questions
Will the folds crack?
Not if crease depth and ink density are specified properly. Ask for a sample and check the folds yourself.
Is dyed board worth the extra?
If cut edges are visible or the box gets handled a lot, yes. For a box opened once, flood printing is usually enough.
Can I print colour on black?
Only opaque inks and foils. Standard process colours are transparent and vanish.
