A tuck box is a folding carton whose flaps fold in and tuck into the body to hold it shut. There is no glue on the closure and no tape, which is why it ships flat and assembles by hand in a couple of seconds.
The confusion around the name is that “tuck box” describes a family rather than one item. The variants differ in where the flaps fold from, and that difference changes both cost and how the box behaves when it is filled.
Telling the variants apart
- Reverse tuck — the top flap folds from the back panel and the bottom from the front, in opposite directions. Cheapest to cut, because the shape nests efficiently on the sheet.
- Straight tuck — both flaps fold from the back. Slightly more material, but the front face stays completely clean, which matters when the design runs edge to edge.
- Tuck top — a tucked lid over a different base construction, usually where the base needs to carry more weight than a tuck can hold.
What tuck construction is good at
Presentation. The board is solid rather than fluted, so the surface is unbroken and takes fine type, photography and foil far better than corrugated does. For anything sitting on a shelf or inside a larger shipper, it is the right format.
It is also fast to assemble and genuinely flat in storage — meaningfully flatter than a corrugated mailer, which matters if you are hand-packing in a small space.
Where it stops working
A tuck closure holds a box shut; it does not hold it together under load. Fill a tuck box past a certain weight and the flap works its way loose in transit. There is no fixed number, because it depends on caliper and box proportions, but the honest guidance is that anything heavy or fragile should be in corrugated instead, or inside a corrugated outer.

Which variant is cheapest?
Reverse tuck, almost always, because of how the shape nests when it is cut.
Can a tuck box be posted on its own?
For flat, light, robust items over short distances, sometimes. For anything else it should travel inside a mailer.
Do you make them in corrugated?
Yes, in E-flute where a tuck carton needs more protection than boxboard offers.
