In a reverse tuck carton the two closing flaps fold from opposite panels: the lid hinges off the back, the base hinges off the front. Set them the same way round and you have a straight tuck instead. It sounds like a trivial distinction and it is the reason this style costs less than any other carton.
Why opposite flaps are cheaper
Cartons are cut from large sheets, and the flat shape of a reverse tuck nests tightly against its neighbours — the flaps of one interlock with the gaps of the next. More boxes come off each sheet, and board yield is a real cost, not a rounding error.

The design consequence
Because the flaps fold from different panels, a tuck flap is visible on both the front and the back of the finished carton. On a straight tuck, both are hidden at the back and the front face is uninterrupted.
This matters if your artwork runs edge to edge across the front. The crease line will sit inside your design area, and a busy image crossing it will show the fold. Designs that leave the front panel relatively clean are unaffected, which is why reverse tuck dominates in categories with typographic packaging.
What it is normally used for
Cosmetics, skincare, supplements, pharmacy lines and small retail goods — anything light, sold on a shelf, where cost per unit matters and the box is not doing structural work. For the same product shipped direct to a customer, it belongs inside a shipping mailer rather than posted alone.
Frequently asked questions
Is reverse tuck weaker than straight tuck?
No. The strength is identical; only the fold direction and the board yield differ.
Can I have a locking base instead?
Yes — a crash-lock or auto-lock base takes more weight than a tucked base. It costs more per unit and is worth it for anything with real mass in it.
What thickness should I choose?
18 pt covers most light retail products. Go heavier if the carton needs to feel substantial in the hand.
