A donut is soft, decorated on top and often glazed. Any movement inside the box smears the icing against a wall or against the next donut, and the product arrives technically intact and completely unsellable.
Grease is the material constraint
Fresh donuts release oil, and plain paperboard absorbs it. Within a couple of hours you get translucent patches on the outside of the box, ink lifting where the grease reaches it, and board that has lost some of its rigidity.
The answer is a grease-resistant inner face — either a barrier coating or a food-grade laminated liner. Both are standard, but they have to be specified up front. It is not something that can be added to an ordinary box afterwards.
Cavities, not compartments
Dividers stop donuts touching each other but let each one slide within its square. A cavity insert cut to the diameter holds each donut in place, so the decorated top never reaches a surface.
Depth matters as much as diameter: enough clearance that the lid does not touch the icing, and no more, so nothing bounces. This is the same fitted-insert logic used across our food packaging range.
A different kind of journey
Unlike most of what we make, this is not a parcel-network product. Donut boxes travel by hand or by courier over short distances, usually within hours. That changes the specification: less emphasis on crush and drop resistance, far more on grease barrier, stability and how well the box carries.
If you are shipping shelf-stable baked goods over longer distances, a standard corrugated mailer with an insert is the better and cheaper answer.
