Books fail in transit in a specific and predictable way. They are heavy for their size, perfectly flat, and their value is concentrated in four corners and a spine — the exact parts a parcel network is worst for.
Why a plain box is the wrong tool
Put a book in a box with any spare room and it becomes a heavy object sliding into rigid walls. Every knock lands on a corner, and a bumped corner on a hardback is visible damage a customer will return.
Filling the gap with paper helps a little and costs on every order. It also does nothing about the real problem, which is that the book can move at all.
How a wrap-around solves it
A book mailer is scored at several depths so it folds down to the thickness of whatever is inside. The contents end up gripped rather than contained: no gap, no slide, no corner impact.
Because it takes the item’s own depth, the finished parcel is as slim as it can be — which matters, since carriers charge on volume as well as weight and a book in a right-sized wrap is close to the minimum possible for its contents.
Not only for books
The same construction suits anything flat and rigid: framed prints, vinyl records, board games, calendars, tablets in cases. The rule is flat and firm rather than literally a book.
For flat items that are soft rather than rigid, a paper padded mailer is lighter and cheaper. For anything with depth or fragility, use a standard mailer box with an insert.

Does one size fit several thicknesses?
Yes, within a range — that is what the multiple score lines are for. Length and width still need to match.
Can it hold more than one book?
Yes, up to the maximum depth the scoring allows. Tell us the thickest bundle you expect.
Is tape needed?
No. A self-seal strip or a tab closure holds it, which is faster at a packing bench and cleaner to open.
