Getting a box to be a colour sounds like one decision. It is actually two, and they have different economics: how the colour is put there, and how closely it needs to match something.
Two ways to make a box coloured
Flood printing covers the board in ink. Any colour is possible, including an exact brand match, and you can print artwork over the top. The board underneath stays its original shade, so cut edges show pale and deep scuffs reveal it.
Dyed-through board arrives coloured from the mill. Cut edges match, wear barely shows, and the colour has a depth flood printing does not reach. The catch is that you choose from the mill’s shades rather than specifying your own, and the range is limited — mostly blacks, kraft tones and a few strong primaries.
If your colour is a specific brand asset, flood printing is usually the only route that can hit it.
The liner underneath changes everything
Printing inks are transparent, so whatever board is beneath shows through. The same ink over kraft brown reads warmer and darker than over white-top — pastels turn muddy, cool greys go greenish, and anything pale largely disappears.
For accurate colour, white-top is the honest specification even though kraft costs less. We say which before quoting rather than after the proof.
Consistency across reorders
Process colour is mixed on press from four inks, so it drifts slightly between runs. For most designs that is invisible. For a brand whose colour is recognised on sight, specify a Pantone spot ink — mixed to a formula, identical every time. The reasoning is set out on branded mailer boxes.
Frequently asked questions
Does a coloured box cost more than plain?
Yes — flood coverage uses considerably more ink than a logo, and dyed board costs more per sheet. The difference narrows at volume.
Can inside and outside differ?
Yes, and a contrasting interior is one of the more effective things you can do with a two-colour budget.
Will the colour match my website exactly?
No — screens emit light, board reflects it. A Pantone reference gets as close as the materials allow.
Send your colour reference
A Pantone code or a physical sample. We will tell you how it behaves on each board and print a sample before the run.
How we build colored mailer boxes.
Measured from the product
We size the box around what goes inside and add the clearance it needs. That removes void fill you would otherwise buy and dimensional weight you would otherwise pay on every order.
Colour that behaves
Process CMYK or a Pantone spot match, outside and in. We tell you how a colour will sit on kraft before the run, not after it.
Board matched to the load
E-flute, B-flute or double wall depending on weight and fragility. We will talk you down a grade as readily as up one.
Assembles in one motion
One-piece construction with a front-tab lock. No tape, no gun, and seconds rather than minutes at the packing bench.
Recyclable as standard
Kraft and corrugated go in the curbside bin with water- and soy-based inks. Plastic lamination changes that, and we say so when you ask for it.
Fifty is a real run
Enough to prove a design before committing to thousands. Pricing steps down at 250, 500 and 1,000 as setup cost spreads.
Customization options
Board, print method and finish are three separate decisions, and each one moves the price. We will tell you which are worth paying for on your product and which are not.
