Chipboard is solid board, not fluted — recycled paper fibre compressed into a dense, rigid sheet. It is the grey material behind a notepad or inside a hardback cover. In packaging it does a specific job well and a general job badly, so knowing which is which saves an expensive mistake.
Solid board versus fluted board
Corrugated gets its strength from a wave of paper trapped between two liners; the air gap is what absorbs impact. Chipboard has no air gap. It is stiff, it holds a crease sharply, and it resists bending — but it does not absorb a shock, it transmits one.
That difference decides everything. Chipboard is excellent where a box needs to feel solid and hold its shape on a shelf. It is the wrong material where a box needs to survive being dropped with something breakable inside.
Where chipboard is the right call
Light products that need presentation more than protection: cosmetics, jewellery, stationery, small electronics accessories, anything going into a gift set. It takes print cleanly because the surface is smooth and unbroken by flute lines, and a laminate on chipboard gives a genuinely premium hand-feel at a fraction of what a rigid box costs.
It is also measured differently. Chipboard is specified in points — thousandths of an inch — so 18 pt and 24 pt describe caliper rather than a flute letter. Heavier caliper means more rigidity, not more impact protection.
Where it is the wrong call
Anything heavy, anything fragile, anything travelling alone through a courier network. Chipboard on its own is not a shipping material. If a chipboard box needs to be posted, it should travel inside a corrugated outer, or the structure should be corrugated in the first place, with chipboard reserved for an inner tray.

Frequently asked questions
Is chipboard recyclable?
Yes — it is usually made from recycled fibre to begin with and goes back into the same stream, provided it has not been plastic-laminated.
Can chipboard boxes ship on their own?
For light, non-fragile items over short distances, sometimes. For anything else we would specify corrugated instead, and say why.
How does the cost compare?
Comparable to corrugated at similar sizes. The saving against a rigid box is substantial, which is why chipboard is often the sensible middle option for premium presentation.
